Format Inspection: Hashing it Out

The history of hashish goes back thousands of years, with many origin stories claiming to be the first. Some say hash originated in Arabia after its mention in the classic Arabic fable, “The Tale of the Hashish Eater.” Others claim a monk discovered its therapeutic effects after finding the plant accidentally. We may never know hash’s true origin, but we have some ideas on how it got to our shelves.  😉

Note: This blog post uses the terms Hashish and Hash interchangeably

About Hashish

It’s likely that this format’s popularity spread outwards from Arabia. Yet, there is evidence of hash use in India. In India, traditional cultures use hash in their popular drink, “Bhang.” Hash remained around Europe and the Middle East for many years. It wasn’t until the early 1970s that hash became common in North America, known as Afghani Hash.

The original form of hash is a hand-extracted product called “Charas.” Charas are a result of trichome build up on the hands of cannabis harvesters. In the 1960’s The “Hash Queen,” Mila Jansen, sped up hash production with her hash-making devices. Modern-day Hash producers sift the buds using methods such as ice-water extraction (a.k.a. bubble hash). Hash production separates trichomes from cannabis flower without the use of solvents. Creating a crumbly, dough-like texture by then pressing the sifted trichomes together.

Have you spotted Hashplant? Since the beginning of legalization, we’ve seen a few licensed producers (LPs) bring a “Hashplant” cultivar to market. While many hash-aficionados were excited, the product is NOT hashish. Rather, hash-makers used this cultivar to create their concentrate.

Some of Hashplant cultivars include

  • Lola Montes by Edison

How to consume Hashish

Originally hash was consumed by oral ingestion. Since then, it has evolved over the years.

  • Crumble hash into a joint
  • Top your bowl with hashish
  • Use a concentrate vaporizer

(Yes, we know there are other ways to consume hash. No, we can’t talk about them.)
