There’s a myriad of reasons you might need to be mobile after having had substances that render you incapable of driving. Luckily, there are also a myriad of ways to get around that do not involve you operating a motor vehicle:
Walk or bike
Edmonton is a wonderful city to walk or bike around in. Pedestrian and bicycle paths abound, and paths often have nifty green areas to sit and rest for a while. Even if it is winter! If you’re wearing warm clothes, drinking a warm beverage to stay hydrated and are shod properly (which for me includes cleats!), walking is possibly one of the best ways to get around town if you’ve indulged. In the summertime, biking on the well maintained and little-used paths is pretty awesome and a great workout. Plus, the fresh air feels great.
Bus & LRT
Edmonton’s public transit is pretty sweet. It offers good coverage of the city and, since the buses are connected to Google, you get real-time information to plan your trip with. Combined with services like free transit service on New Year’s Eve, it’s a great choice to get around after a party. Bonus: you don’t have to worry about where your car might be.
Tested, tried and true: the designated driver is a foolproof way to get around if you’re heading out a ways away. It’s polite to offer the Designated Driver a special selection of drinks and snacks that other people can’t get access to, regardless of the puppy-dog-eyed begging that might ensue. The Designated Driver is also within rights to take embarrassing pictures and make fun of their friends mercilessly. Make sure everyone involved is clear on who is the Designated Driver for the evening, and take turns from one evening to the next. Or be grateful you have that friend who always
And yes, of course, there are taxis and Ubers and what not. The point is if you need to get around after you’ve indulged, don’t drive.
